MSK Foot & Ankle: Holistic Management & Treatment Strategies – Preston 26-27 February 2024

Course description:

This 2 day face-to-face short course offers participants an opportunity to learn about the orthotic management of musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders of the foot and ankle in a group setting (maximum 16 participants). The experienced faculty of two Orthotists will share their knowledge and skills in both theory and practical sessions.

Prior to the commencement of the course, registrants will be asked to read four designated full text journal articles. During the course, participants will attend taught theoretical sessions mixed with active learning which will involve dividing into smaller groups to interpret x-rays and assess each other’s feet and ankles with feedback and guidance from the faculty team.

The course offers participants an intimate, focused, and friendly learning environment away from the bustle of everyday clinical work to refresh their knowledge with best available evidence and equip them with the skills to enable them to build their confidence and MSK practice.

Aims:
This event aims to equip Orthotists and other AHP’s regularly involved in treating adult MSK foot and ankle conditions with the assessment, diagnostic and image interpretation skills to enable them to differentially diagnose and holistically manage Musculoskeletal foot and ankle conditions.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this event the participant will be able to:
• Describe normal Foot and Ankle function
• Describe a range of MSK Foot and Ankle pathologies
• Define the tests required for differential diagnosis of a range of Musculoskeletal Foot and Ankle pathologies
• Demonstrate competence in interpreting the outcomes of a range of diagnostic tests
• Utilise imaging as part of the MSK patient assessment
• Demonstrate the ability to differentially diagnose a range of Musculoskeletal Foot and Ankle conditions
• Perform a thorough biomechanical examination to determine the biomechanical deficit
• Establish an evidence-based holistic treatment plan to address the presenting issue
• Generate a detailed evidence-based orthotic prescription, management plan including anticipated outcome

Intended Participants:
• Orthotists who have not previously attended the “Assessment, Diagnosis and Treatment of Musculoskeletal Foot and Ankle Problems for Orthotists” course
• AHP’s regularly involved in treating adult MSK foot and ankle conditions
and
• Orthotists who attended the “Assessment, Diagnosis and Treatment of Musculoskeletal Foot and Ankle
Problems for Orthotists” between 2015 – 2016

Cardiff 2024

After the success of our 2023 regional conferences in Scotland and South England, BAPO is excited to announce that we will hold our next regional conference in Wales on Friday 8th March 2024 at the Future Inn Cardiff Bay, Hemingway Road, Cardiff, CF10 4AU

The theme for the one-day event is People and Place: Enhancing the quality of prosthetic and orthotic services in Wales. Our programme will consist of a mix of invited speakers and free papers.

The event is targeted at P & O professionals and the wider P & O community. It is open to both BAPO members and non-members. It is a great opportunity to enhance knowledge, support continuing professional development, network with colleagues and engage with exhibitors face-to-face.

The programme will start at 11:00 am and conclude at 4:00 pm. Registration and the exhibition will start at 10:00 am. There will be a 1-hour lunch break and a 30-minute coffee break in the afternoon to allow delegates to network with colleagues and friends.

Kerrie Phipps

National Allied Health Professions (AHP) Lead Primary & Community Care | Arweinydd Proffesiynau Perthynol i Iechyd (AHP) ar gyfer Gofal Sylfaenol a Gofal yn y Gymuned

Kerrie provides professional leadership and expert strategic advice, on a national basis, relating to the role of Allied Health Professionals working across Primary and Community Care, in line with the vision of A Healthier Wales, the Strategic Programme for Primary Care and the AHP Framework in Wales – ‘Looking Forward Together’.

Her role focuses on optimising the AHPs offer and accessibility across Primary and Community Care, in order to support a preventative, pro-active whole system pathway approach to recovery and rehabilitation provision, which prioritises services at or close to home and enables citizens throughout Wales to live as independently as possible for as long as possible.

Kerrie has over 30 years of experience working across health and social care and is passionate about AHPs utilising their unique skill set to support presenting needs, delivering person-centred support within a place-based care model of care. She is a leader committed to creating a culture of compassionate care, and inspiring greater collaboration to bring positive, inclusive and productive transformation.

Summary of Presentation:

Optimising the AHPs offer and accessibility across Primary and Community Care in Wales

The AHP Framework for Wales identified AHPs need to be utilised more effectively to inspire and enable people to lead healthier lives, be more easily and directly accessible, and work at the top of their ability with visible and transformational leadership. With ‘strong primary care’ at the heart of everything that they do.

This translates into the AHP ambition in Wales, for well-integrated services, rooted in the community, with the full range of practitioner levels and prudent optimisation of AHP skill set.

    Improving Quality with Digital Manufacturing

    Doug Young studied at the National Centre for Training and Education in Prosthetics and Orthotics at Strathclyde University in Scotland, graduating in 2006. Since then he has worked across the UK in both the NHS and private sectors. His specialism lies in complex orthotic problem solving, lower limb biomechanics and neurological conditions. His passion for high quality orthotic treatment inevitably led him into 3D printing where he has developed extensive knowledge and experience.

      Dr Nicky Eddison

      BAPO Chair, Associate Professor / Consultant Orthotist 

      Presentation – The current status of the UK prosthetic and orthotic workforce and implications for the future

      Dr Nicky Eddison received her PhD in biomechanical optimisation of ankle-foot orthoses and footwear combinations in 2018 from Staffordshire University and currently holds the position of Association Professor at the Centre for Biomechanics and Rehabilitation Technologies at Staffordshire University. In addition, Nicky is a consultant orthotist and service manager at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust.  In March 2024, Nicky will take the position of Chair of BAPO.

      Nicky has a portfolio of peer-reviewed publications, achieving impact within the orthotics profession both nationally and internationally and across the wider healthcare domain of Allied Health Professions. Her research interests include biomechanical optimisation, prescription footwear, gait analysis, digitalisation in healthcare, and health inequalities.

        Louise Henstock & Dr. Kim Stuart

        Exploring Enhanced Level Practice – a new career structure to shape the workforce

        Louise is a Senior Lecturer and Directorate Lead for Learning and Teaching across Allied and Public Health in the School of Health and Society with roles including leading on the implementation of Universal Design for Learning. Louise completed a BSc Physiology from the University of Leeds (1996), qualified as a Physiotherapist in 1999 (University of Bradford), and completed her Master’s degree in Sport and Exercise Management in 2003 (Leeds Metropolitan University). She has worked both clinically (NHS and private sectors) and within Higher Education Institutions (York St. John University, Cambridge University, and the University of Salford), completing her Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice in 2007. She is currently an external examiner for Birmingham City University, MSc Pre-registration Physiotherapy programme. Louise has been a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2017 and has extensive experience in the design and delivery of both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, covering Allied Health Professions, Nursing and Medicine.

        Louise has a keen interest in innovation and design and has recently co-led an innovation partnership with Coventry University in the development of a National Schema in Enhanced Practice (across seven Allied Health Professions), on behalf of NHS England.

        Kim is an Associate Professor in Occupational Therapy and is Allied Health Professionals Development Lead across the School of Health and Care with roles that include leading on the development of a new learning and teaching strategy for the pre-registration and foundation level curriculums.  Kim completed a BSc Occupational Therapy at the University of Derby (1999) and has undertaken an MSc and Professional Doctorate.

        She has worked both clinically (NHS and charitable sectors) and within Higher Education Institutions including holding roles in research, strategic commissioning and provider leadership within the NHS.

        Kim has been a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2019 and has extensive experience in the design and delivery of both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, covering Allied Health Professions, Nursing and Social Care.           Paul Drayton

          A comparison study of three Transfemoral Sockets for an active teenager

          Graduating from University of Salford in 2005, Paul Drayton is a Prosthetist at Swansea Artificial Limb and Appliance Centre since 2007.

          Swansea Artificial Limb and Appliance Service is commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialist Services Committee (WHSSC) to provide all levels of upper and lower limb prostheses and devices to approximately 1300 service users from Aberystwyth to Bridgend.

            Chiazoka Ezeuzo

            My journey as an international Orthotist in the UK; challenges faced and solutions for easy integration

            Chiazoka Ezeuzo (Mary) is an internationally trained Prosthetist and Orthotist, with BSc in Prosthetics and Orthotics from Federal University of Technology Owerri, Nigeria.


            Mary currently practices as an Orthotist with Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, having years of clinical and managerial experience.

            Mary is passionate about building greater intercultural leadership and management skills across culturally diverse teams with the purpose of improving the quality of prosthetic and orthotic services in the country.
            She also works with the AHP RWT Education team to deliver training sessions and actively engage AHP students.
            Being a preceptorship champion, she is creating more awareness on ease of transitioning for Newly qualified/ internationally qualified practitioners into full practice.

              Matthew Hill

              Development of a screening tool to assess the clinical suitability of Off-the-Shelf Stability Therapeutic Footwear (OSSTF) for mobility-impaired children

              Matthew has recently completed his PhD in children’s therapeutic footwear at Staffordshire University’s Centre for Biomechanics and Rehabilitation Technologies. He has previously worked within the NHS, specialising in children’s podiatry. He is a visiting lecturer at Staffordshire University and The University of Malta, delivering undergraduate and postgraduate modules on paediatric lower limb development and pathology.

                Gwen Roberts

                An exploration of the representation of the allied health professions in senior leadership positions in the UK National Health Service.

                Gwen Lyn Roberts is a Prosthetist in NHS Cardiff and Vale. Prior to graduating from Strathclyde University she worked in various healthcare settings, experiencing the complexities of navigating health and social care in the UK. She has a passion for patient-centred care and is a believer that the best care is received through multi-disciplinary involvement, which has led to a focus on leadership within the AHP community to advocate for professions, and to ensure patients receive gold standard care.

                    Enza Leone is a Research Officer within the Centre for Biomechanics and Rehabilitation Technologies (CBRT) at Staffordshire University. Enza is a physiotherapist and currently pursuing a PhD at Keele University. She has been involved in projects looking at the service of Allied Health Professionals.

                        A message from last year’s winner, Clara Bailey, Orthotist

                        Hi, I was the winner of the AHA British Association of Prosthetist and Orthotists (BAPO) Award for inspirational innovators last year. 

                        Do you have a colleague that deserves to be nominated?  Maybe they are working to develop new processes to improve the patient experience or are working on a project to develop a new product.  They might be working with an allied profession to ultimately improve the O&P outcomes for either the patient or the orthotist or prosthetist. It may be part of their “day” job, or it may be a project that runs alongside it. They may be working as an individual or part of a team. 

                        Nominating a colleague or team of colleagues is a great way to raise awareness of their work, as well as make them feel recognised and appreciated. This can increase their confidence in the work they do.  

                        Receiving my award definitely contributed to me finally being brave enough to publish my book “Improving the Fit of Therapeutic Footwear” which has generated interest and feedback beyond my wildest expectations. I was a guest speaker at the BAPO conference in Farnborough and have had the chance to speak to many people about the issues relating to footwear provision, enforcing the importance of the work I have been doing. I also feel the award further substantiates me as the presenter of my CPD-accredited footwear course.

                        The award itself is presented at a fantastic ceremony and I was fortunate to attend and share the experience of being treated like VIP’s with my admin colleague Tracey, whose hard work behind the scenes allows me to achieve what I do.  It was great to meet so many inspirational people there and to hear about what they have achieved in their services.

                        I would really encourage you to nominate your deserving colleague.  They will be very grateful.

                        The BAPO and Staffordshire University Research Hub Application

                        Research project:

                        The focus of this project will be on exploring and testing the rigidity of AFOs and how prescription design impacts rigidity. The research team consists of Prof. Nachi Chockalingam, Dr Nicky Eddison and Panagiotis Chatzistergos.

                        Benefits:

                        The P&O professionals who join the team to work on the project will gain experience of how a real research project works. They will work alongside the team learning how to carry out a literature search, design and execute a research project, collect and analyse data and write a paper for peer-reviewed publication and/or Health Education England report. The individual will be duly recognised within any future publications or reports either as a co-author or acknowledged as a contributor depending on the contributions they make to the overall project.

                        The process:

                        Once the applications have been received from BAPO members, the research team will choose two applicants and brief them on the detail of the project. The successful applicants will then be invited to all the research meetings and be included as a full member of the team for the duration of the project.

                        Who can apply:

                        Applications are open to all UK Prosthetists and Orthotists who are BAPO members; experience in research, years of practice and current job role are not relevant to the application process. The aim is to give everyone the opportunity to be part of research. Please note: the research hub is only for qualified P&O staff, students are not permitted to apply.

                        Opportunities for postdoctoral researchers

                         

                        The NIHR currently has a wide range of training and career development opportunities available for individuals at postdoctoral level, including a number of brand new funding programmes. These awards are accessible to those from a variety of professions, and can provide excellent support to those wishing to further progress their research career. 

                        Undergraduate Internship Programme

                        The Undergraduate Internship Programme is a new scheme which provides funding for early to mid-career researchers to host up to 3 interns. Interns will undertake a fully funded and flexible placement in the area or discipline they are interested in pursuing, whilst the applicant will have an opportunity to gain valuable supervisory and grant application experience.

                        Advanced Clinical and Practitioner Academic Fellowship

                        The ACAF supports postdoctoral researchers to develop their academic career while developing their health or care career. The award offers funding to cover the Lead Applicant’s salary costs, the costs of an appropriate research project, and the costs of a tailored academic and professional development programme.

                        Clinical Academic Research Partnership

                        The Clinical Academic Research Partnerships (CARP) scheme funds research-qualified health professionals, not currently undertaking any substantial research activity, to form a collaborative high-quality research partnership with established biomedical and applied health researchers.

                        The DSE award is a funding opportunity aimed at supporting early to mid-career researchers in gaining specific skills and experience to underpin the next phase of their research career.                         Global Research Professorships

                        The Global Research Professorship programme supports outstanding academics to work at professorial level. The programme funds researchers undertaking research that aims to specifically and primarily benefit people in LMICs eligible for Official Development Assistance (ODA). The award provides an extensive support package alongside the professorship, to include support posts, research costs and a leadership and development programme.

                        The Advanced Fellowship provides funding and support to individuals at postdoctoral level with the potential to become future leaders in research within the NIHR’s remit.                         End Point Assessment Consultancy Opportunity

                        NHS England’s End-point Assessment Organisation (EPAO), deliver end-point assessments for apprentices completing apprenticeships within the Healthcare Science workforce.  End-point assessments are the final exams undertaken by an apprentice and are designed to determine whether the apprentice is competent in their role.

                        The EPAO is currently looking for experienced individuals from the Prosthetics and Orthotics workforce to help us to:

                        • Write and develop the assessment material or
                        • Scrutinise the assessment material developed.

                        Both roles pertain to the material for the Level 3 Prosthetics and Orthotics apprenticeship standard.

                        Essential Information:

                        • Individuals will be recruited on a consultant basis and can be paid as a self-employed individual, or their trust can be paid (if work is completed during work time).
                        • Full training, on both roles on offer, will be provided by the EPAO team. Training sessions are usually held as online sessions via MS Teams.

                        Assessment Writing role:

                        The End point Assessment Writer will be required to:

                        • Write and contribute to the development of assessment material to be used for stipulated standard, including all questions, grading criteria and accompanying documentation.
                        • Support the EPAO in the assessment development design process.
                        • Attend all training sessions on developing assessment material held by the EPAO.

                        Scrutineer Role

                        The End point Assessment Scrutineer will be required to:

                        • Contribute to the development of assessment material by reviewing and scrutinising developed material to ensure it is fit for purpose and aligns to current industry methods, specialisms, technologies, products, and performance expectations.
                        • Provide constructive and comprehensive written feedback and recommendations on material reviewed where required in the design cycle (this is an iterative process therefore review and scrutiny will be required throughout).
                        • Attend all training sessions on developing assessment material and specific scrutiny based training sessions held by the EPAO.
                        • Attend and participate in feedback meetings during the development, scrutiny, and ratification process.
                        • Adhere to submission deadlines stipulated by the EPAO.

                        Timing commitments: 2 working days (8 hours per day)

                        Payment rate: £125 per day

                        The National Education and Training Survey (NETS)

                        NETS will open from 3 October – 28 November 2023.

                        The NETS is the only national survey open to all students, trainees and doctors and dentists in training undertaking a practice placement or training post in healthcare services across England. It is the voice of the current and future multi-professional healthcare workforce. By understanding your experience, we can work together to ensure that all individuals are supported to learn and train in safe and inclusive learning environments.

                        NHS England Education Quality teams triangulate NETS results with multiple education quality indicators, including other sources of learner feedback and soft intelligence, to form a comprehensive picture of the multi-professional practice learning environment. Together, this information is used to identify areas of good practice in addition to emerging and escalating concerns at a national, regional, organisational and professional level.

                        The results of the NETS will be published in January 2024 and will be available to view at national, regional, professional and provider-level with the option to analyse response data by programme and specialty.

                        NHS England are seeking to reach a larger number of Allied Health Profession students and trainees. Working collaboratively to reach as many students as possible will enable them to develop the broadest possible picture of clinical learning environments across England. This will provide a valuable source of evidence for all of us to drive improvement and learn from good practice.

                        Applications to the programme will open from the 2nd – 29th October 2023, with a cohort of 8 starting in March 2024.
                         
                        The NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme, delivered by Anglia Ruskin University and part of the Accelerated Access Collaborative (AAC), is the biggest entrepreneurial workforce development programme of its kind. We are inviting budding entrepreneurs to apply for this ground-breaking programme that is helping bring innovations into the NHS to improve patient care.
                         
                        The programme lasts 1 year, is free, and open to all NHS staff. It provides learning, opportunities and experiences through which our entrepreneurs develop the commercial skills and knowledge to accelerate their innovations that will, in turn help transform patient care, as well as providing them with the entrepreneurial skills, knowledge and experience that will help them in their day jobs. A dedicated programme on how to build a start-up or develop an intrapreneurial idea is delivered as a series of educational events called pit stops, which can be attended either in person or virtually.
                         
                        Our inclusive programme and community create a space where NHS staff can develop their innovation or idea without having to leave the health service. The programme offers mentoring, bespoke commercial education, customer matching, resources, and development tools and access to a community of likeminded individuals and industry experts.

                        The British Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists (BAPO) in collaboration with NHS England Workforce Training and Education (NHSE WT&E) National AHP Preceptorship and Foundation Support Programme held a Zoom Webinar on 13 September tailored specifically for prosthetists and orthotists.
