BAPO Tech and Trends – Steeper – Carbon Fiber AFOs Changed Everything … Now It’s Time to Change Them!
Despite significant advances in orthotic technology, many ankle-foot orthoses remain static in design and function. Carbon fibre AFOs introduced important improvements in weight reduction and dynamic response, yet because these devices are manufactured in predefined sizes, their biomechanical characteristics are largely preset. Clinicians are therefore often required to explore multiple brands and device types to find the least compromising solution, frequently driven more by anatomical fit than by the functional needs of the patient. Once selected, further adaptation is typically limited or not possible.
Elevate Movement incorporates adjustability and adaptability directly into its carbon AFO design. Features such as adjustable stiffness, controlled rotation, and dynamic foot and ankle support can be addressed during the customised fitting of prefabricated carbon fibre devices. This allows clinicians to better match biomechanical function to the needs of the individual while preserving the ability to adapt the device as functional requirements evolve.
For users with significant lower limb impairment, full tri-planar support may be required to restore stability and confidence while standing and walking. Conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, and advanced multiple sclerosis illustrate this need. The Swift carbon fibre AFO combines prefabricated carbon fibre modules with templated, custom-fabricated components to provide high levels of dynamic stability while maintaining an ultra-light device with progressively adjustable dynamic characteristics.
Finally, we are very much aware of the fact that the day isn’t over when the shoes come off. The Step drop-foot sock extends foot and ankle support by providing positioning, safety, and functional assistance when conventional orthotic devices are not worn. Particularly during later in-house activities or nighttime journeys to the bathroom, but also in the shower, around the pool, or even at the beach, Step helps reduce the risk of stumbles and falls and maintains safer mobility.

Design a prosthetic limb for a superhero Competition
The British Association of Prosthetics and Orthotics, in collaboration with the Limbless Association, and LIMB-art, is launching “Design a Superhero with a Prosthetic Limb” for Key Stage 2 pupils across the UK .
This engaging project challenges students to design a prosthetic limb for a superhero, helping them explore engineering, design thinking, and the human impact of healthcare careers. Along the way, pupils also learn about the role of prosthetists and how science and creativity combine to change lives.
