About BAPO
The British Association of Prosthetics and Orthotics (BAPO) is the professional body for prosthetists and orthotists in the UK.
We support the profession by providing professional guidance, education and development opportunities. We also advocate for high-quality, safe and effective prosthetic and orthotic care.
Although improving patient care and safety is central to our work, BAPO is not a statutory regulator. This means that BAPO cannot:
- Investigate individual prosthetists or orthotists
- Decide whether professional misconduct has taken place
- Resolve complaints about an assessment, treatment or device
- Provide individual clinical advice or assess a device remotely
- Provide a second clinical opinion
- Recommend a particular clinician or course of treatment
- Arrange refunds, compensation or replacement devices
What is Prosthetics and Orthotics
Prosthetics and orthotics (P&O) is a specialist healthcare profession that helps people move more comfortably, safely and independently.
- Prosthetics involves designing, fitting and supporting the use of artificial limbs for people who have lost a limb or were born without one. A prosthetist works with each person to create a device suited to their body, lifestyle and goals.
- Orthotics involves assessing, designing and fitting braces or supports—called orthoses—to improve movement, reduce pain, protect joints or correct physical problems. Examples include insoles, ankle-foot orthoses, spinal braces and knee braces.
Prosthetists and orthotists are Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) who combine clinical knowledge, biomechanics, engineering and practical skills. They work with children and adults affected by injury, illness, disability or long-term conditions, helping them achieve the best possible mobility, function and quality of life. There are also prosthetic and Orthotic Support Workers and Technicians who may be involved in patient care
